A tisket, a tasket…

You gotta squeeze a little, squeeze a little, Tease a little more
Easy operator come a knockin’ on my door

So I’ve been assigned a task. Tomorrow when I head over for the home inspection, I’ve been informed that I need to take the digi-cam and procure muchos cuadros of the new abode to show the co-workers when I come back next week.

Wooowho. Maybe I need to find a decent photo gallery to intergrate with the site here… ~shrug~… (Of course, I lost all my photos from years past in a website move a while back, so I unless I find a copy I forgot about someplace… ~sigh~…)

So what does this have to with Def Leppard lyrics you ask? Absolutely nothing, I just happened to be listening to Hair Nation on Sirius and it was playing a couple moments ago, and now, even though Ozzy is currently warbling out “Yes I’ll see you, see you on the other side…” my head is still infested with Joe Elliot expressing his desire to be treated like a grande from Starbucks… oh well.

Also, in the site news category, I realized today that the clock on the site here was seriously out of whack. My bad.. When I made the move to WordPress, I neglected to double-check myself, and I had the site set to adjust to UTC+5.5, instead of UTC-5… oops. All fixed now.

Crime Stats Fun

Alright, so I’ve been pondering this whole “East Syyyyde” versus “North Syyyyde” thing this morning, wondering if maybe I was missing something that everyone else knows.  I figured maybe since I lived over there most of my life I was just blind to some of the things going on… everyone always talks about the crime over there, so I figured I’d check it out.

Thanks to the nice folks at the local Police Department for their handy little online interactive crime map, I was able to pluck some numbers here.  Basically what I have is, based on three years worth of data (2002, 2003, and 2004) the average number of crimes within a half mile radius…  Location "Old Hood" is where we currently reside, up in the "fashionable north side"…  Location "New Hood" is, of course, the half-mile radius around our soon to be abode.  Just for shits and giggles, cause I’m a thorough type of person, I also ran the numbers for the half-mile radius around the in-laws place of residence, because we all know that is the gold-standard to which any location is measured, that is listed as “InLaw Hood”…

Location Homicide Rape Robbery Assault Burglary Theft Vehicle Theft Arson Drug Abuse Vandalism Sex Offense
Old Hood 1 5 14.7 50.7 66 251 47.7 4 58 150 6.3
New Hood 0.3 0.7 6.3 15.3 27.7 120.7 12.3 1.7 13.3 33 2
InLaw Hood 0.3 0.7 10 20.7 50 166 10.7 .3 31.7 71 1

Now, the way that chart reads to me (after dumping it into excel for some quick counting)…  on average there’s 2.8x as much crime within a half mile of our "fashionable north side place of residence" as there is within a half mile of the place surrounded by "those people".  (Rape and Vandalism being the two categories with the largest difference between the two, with seven times as many rapes in the fashionable area, and 4.5 times as much vandalism).

Comparing the numbers between the east side residence and the prestigious area surrounding the InLaws place of residence… well, they are fairly close to one another, but the "New Hood" still comes out with less crimes on average in a year if you add all the columns up. (Let me save you the trip to a calculator, in raw "add up the crimes" fashion, you come out with 654 crimes a year where we currently live, 362 a year in the InLaws Hood, and 233 a year in the New Hood.)

Now granted, that’s not to say the entire east side is a pleasure dome of quiet living.  Just for fun I also ran the numbers for different half-mile radius, in a slightly different area of the east side.. a half-mile-radius area that I would fully expect to be a bit more… active.  This area in fact is the one I used to live in, a half-mile area that contained two separate low-income apartment complexes that were so bad for crime and drama that well, both of them are gone now. (The man stepped in as part of their “Revitalization effort” and leveled both and is redeveloping the land into other things). However these changes are fairly recent and since the numbers here go back a few years, the numbers here are still affected by the past of the area, and also the fact that some of the other areas right around here are not the best… (This is also known as the area I wouldn’t be wandering around in barefoot and naked at 3am if I could help it)…  The numbers there?  Oh yeah, they were a bit higher, around the 1,600 crimes a year mark.

So in short, what I discovered from this little project is about what I expected (although honestly, I didn’t expect the numbers for our current place of residence to be so high! Who knew the old folks around us where so into drugs and vandalism!?)… That being that while some areas of the east side are crazy-bad on the crime side of things, the surrounding areas around our new little strip of happiness? They come out quieter then either where we are now, or the inlaws place. 😛

East syyyyddddde

Our house, was our castle and our keep
Our house, in the middle of our street

Our house, that was where we used to sleep
Our house, in the middle of our street

So, after driving past maybe a dozen houses (tops), and actually stepping inside a total of… three. Ze offer was made, Ze offer was accepted.. now the fun part begins. (In all honestly, the other half spent a little more time driving past and checking out places then I.. there was a weekends worth of house-hunting that I was too sick to partake in… I only stepped inside of three places personally though)

The fact that new place is on the East side of town.. over there where those people live… well… I probably find much more humor in that part then I really should (after all, how we break it to the in-laws I know not… they will not be thrilled with the location, this I know). It’s really a nice house, and the neighborhood seems quiet and friendly enough. But it’s over *there*… muahahhaa.

[Disclaimer: I grew up on the east side.. I am one of those people… I just find it intensely humorus that much ado was made about my move “up” to the north side of town a couple years back, and here we are, four years later, and the absolutely most fabolous house to be found and had just so happens to be *back* over there, among… those people… muahahahaha. To me the whole thing is a mute point, I spent 24 years living “over there”, and while I know some areas that are a bit more.. interesting, then others, I never felt unsafe or “lessor” for living “over there”… however I know that there is, to some folks, a… stigma associated with parts of said area… when I moved up north, this was cause for much teasing and proding by certain folks… really it was more of a private joke between me and the wife… while I never saw my old hood as “bad”, I did (and do still) recognize that there be some mighty… interestin folk who live over there. But you know what, there be some mighty interesting folk who live up here on the north side too… the difference is that up here none of the more interesting folks speak english…. but I digress… back to the house.]

It is an awesome house me thinks. Big privacy fenced back yard for partying that backs to a nice wooded area… nice deck for grillin and chillin… huge downstairs area to house the awesome TV and home-theater system of thunder… 3 bedrooms, 1.75 baths (dont ask where the extra .25 bath comes from, you wouldnt believe me if I tried to explain)… a nice pool to float around in while the maid brings me my icy smoothie drinks.. erm.. I mean…

Anyway.. now the fun part begins.. the paperwork, the settlement, the getting the place ready, scheduling the move, working out all the details of that fun stuff.. and of course.. paying for it. But overall, happy me is… Could we have found something “tolerable” in our price range and still been in the “oh so fashionable” north-side of town? Sure. Infact, I saw the insides of two seperate house that were in said fashionable area… both within our “Oh yeah, you can do that” price range according to the finance man… but neither of them gave me the same warm fuzzy feeling I had the moment I checked out this place, and neither had anywhere near the amount of space (or solitude) that the backyard in this place has… One of them was very similar (age/layout) to this place, but was quite a bit smaller and way more cramped feeling… the other screamed “Deathtrap!” at me, even before I fell down the incredibly trecherous stairwell of doom…. and both of them were a good 15-25K more then the one we went with.

So yeah, I’m going back “Over there”, where I shall live with “those people”… and this time I’m taking my loving wife with me, first we tease her bangs up to about 4 feet high, then we start on the wardrobe (somebody got a line on some skin-tight black jean pants? Who makes plaid body suits in this day in age?)… I already sectioned off a piece of the backyard in my mind where I can put the (as of yet to be aquired) Camaro up on blocks while I work on it…

muahahaaa.

New Life? Could it be?

Alright, heres the deal. My LiveJournal blogging days are pretty much over. I’ve decided that:

1) I like the things I can do with WordPress far more then I like the limited things I can do with LiveJournal.
2) I’m too much of a lazy freak to really keep two seperate blog-type-things going at the same time.
3) The only reason I really wanted an LJ account was so I could comment on other peoples blogs anyway.

So the couple of (judged by me) ‘good’ entries that were in my LJ are now here. And anything new and noteworthy (ha!) will also go here. The rest of the ‘floatsam’ that was filling my LJ is now gone… p00f I says.

Thus marks a (me hope) new beginning for LtB… I realized this morning on the way into the office that I actually miss writting on a regular basis… so I want to do something with this place again… First thing I need to do is upgrade my WordPress installation… then there are a few changes I want to make to the look of the site here… and I want to get some other things added to it.. (woowho, more work!)

Anyway… lets see how it goes.
